About the Role
As Principal Strategic Studies, you will play a key role in shaping the long-term value and growth of the NOJV Asset portfolio. You will provide leadership, governance, and technical stewardship across strategic studies, ensuring opportunities, development pathways, and investment alternatives are effectively framed, evaluated, and assured.
Acting as a trusted advisor to the Head of Planning & Technical, you will support asset growth, portfolio optimization, investment prioritization, and strategic decision-making. By applying rigorous analysis, decision-quality principles, and value-risk frameworks, you will influence major Joint Venture and shareholder decisions to maximize sustainable long-term value.
This role offers the opportunity to impact a multi-billion-dollar portfolio while supporting responsible resource development, sustainable growth, and long-term value creation.
Main Responsibilities
- Lead the Strategic Studies framework across the NOJV Asset, ensuring consistent evaluation of opportunities, development pathways, and investment alternatives aligned with BHP objectives.
- Provide independent challenge, assessment, and assurance of strategic studies and investment opportunities across a portfolio of non-operated joint ventures.
- Advise senior leaders, Board Directors, and Committee representatives on strategic pathways, investment alternatives, and portfolio opportunities.
- Identify, prioritize, and assure value creation opportunities that support asset strategy, growth options, portfolio optimization, and capital allocation decisions.
- Develop, review,
and challenge OW/OWO scenarios and competing alternatives to support high-quality decision-making.
- Integrate technical, financial, sustainability, and risk expertise to identify value drivers, uncertainties, and mitigation strategies, delivering decision-ready recommendations.
- Provide governance and assurance over studies undertaken by Joint Venture operators, ensuring transparency, methodological consistency, and quality outcomes.
- Drive continuous improvement of strategic studies governance, methodologies, and decision-quality frameworks.
- Build effective relationships across Joint Venture operators, shareholders, BHP Functions, and Centres of Excellence to enhance strategic thinking and portfolio performance.
- Promote health, safety, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development in all strategic assessments and recommendations.
About You
- 15+ years of experience in strategic studies, project development, mine planning, business development, project evaluation, or growth portfolios within large-scale mining operations.
- University degree in Mining Engineering or related engineering, desirable MBA, MSc.
- Strong business and strategic acumen, with the ability to influence executive decisions through credibility, insight, and collaboration rather than formal authority.
- Proven experience framing opportunities, evaluating alternatives, and supporting capital allocation decisions involving significant uncertainty and long-term value considerations.
- Deep expertise applying Decision Evaluation, value optimization, and capital allocation methodologies to major investment decisions.
- Experience operating within Joint Venture environments and collaborating with operators, shareholders, technical subject matter experts, and governance forums.
- Strong experience advising Boards, Committees, and executive decision-makers through structured, decision-ready recommendations.
- Recognized expertise in strategic studies, decision quality, investment evaluation, and value optimization.
- Experience working across general and cross-cultural environments with a strong commitment to collaboration and inclusion.
- Postgraduate qualifications such as an MBA, MSc, Project Management, or equivalent are desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to health, safety, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development.
- Strong capability in integration, coordination, and technical governance.
- Exceptional analytical and structuring skills, with the ability to ensure coherence, comparability, and decision-readiness of complex studies and submissions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical and commercial information for diverse stakeholder groups.
- Willingness and ability to travel as required.
- Mandatory English communication skills.
- Spanish and Portuguese are desirable.
