Summary
The Array Maintenance Group (AMG) Supervisor leads and manages operations-related activities at the ALMA Array Operations Site (AOS) and the Operations Support Facility (OSF). Main responsibilities include ensuring adherence to JAO safety regulations and operational procedures, allocating resources and assets, coordinating tasks, providing technical expertise, and directing preventive and corrective maintenance processes. This role is critical to minimizing array downtime and maximizing availability for scientific operations. The AMG Supervisor collaborates with teams across the Department of Engineering and supports the requirements of the Department of Science Operations (DSO). The AMG Supervisor achieves annual objectives by effectively managing team performance in alignment with the organization's values.
Key responsibilities

· Lead, manage, and mentor a high-performing team, fostering an engaged staff aligned with JAO culture.
· Supervise daily operations and maintenance of all Array subsystems and equipment, ensuring compliance with observatory procedures and safety regulations.
· Based on task lists and shift priorities:
o Schedule the execution of tasks on a daily and weekly basis for the supervised team.
o Assign tasks appropriately within the team.
o Monitor task execution in the field, adapting to environmental conditions and operational constraints in coordination with line management and Site Operations Authority.
o Oversee task quality and ensure proper reporting using corporate tools such as CMMS, Smartsheet, and JIRA.
· Manage and control tools and resources required for maintenance and operations (e.g., laboratories, workshops, special vehicles), ensuring their availability and efficient use in collaboration with other groups and departments.
· Enforce safety regulations and training protocols in cooperation with the ALMA Safety Department:
o Initiate job hazard analyses and work permits.
o Review operational and maintenance procedures.
o Ensure correct use and upkeep of personal protective equipment (PPE).
o Report all accidents, incidents, or near-misses in accordance with ALMA safety procedures.
· Conduct regular reviews of maintenance plans and update them in the CMMS, with support from area specialists.
· Assist Group Managers with budget preparation, maintenance planning,



equipment status updates, spare parts availability, procedure updates, and administrative matters related to staff.
· Support Group Managers in reporting Observatory, Department, and Group Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
· Collaborate with the Engineering Services Group (ESG) on technical analysis, trending, troubleshooting, and planning coordination.
· Support off-site hardware maintenance and repair activities, following established procedures and coordinating with relevant personnel in the Integrated Engineering Teams (IETs).
· Manage the performance of the supervised team, including annual assessments, professional development (certifications/training), coaching and mentoring. Specifically:
o communicate effectively with team members, fostering motivation and engagement, acting with integrity, and continuously developing leadership skills.
o drive team performance by managing tasks effectively and resolving issues as they arise.
· Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
Working Conditions
· Duty Station: The position will be based at the Operations Support Facility (OSF) of ALMA, near San Pedro de Atacama (Region II), working on 8x6 shift basis. Work is typically performed in high altitude conditions (from **** to **** m) in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions.
· Physical health compatible with high altitude conditions: must pass a High-Altitude Medical Exam for work at high altitude.
· Work is typically performed in a research or development environment, both indoors and outdoors.
· Must work near moving mechanical parts and/or electrical equipment.
· Must be able to operate a personal computer with standard office software.
· Occasionally required to climb or balance, and stoop, kneeling crouch.

Requirements:
Minimum requirements (must have):




· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
· Minimum of 3 years of experience supervising or leading teams/ projects involving technicians and engineers in a maintenance environment.
· Proven experience with troubleshooting of mechanical equipment in the field.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools such as Excel and Word.
· Valid Class B driver's license (as per Chilean regulation).
· Fluent in Spanish.
· English level B2.
Desirable Requirements (an asset if present):
· Master's degree in Engineering or related field.
· Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
· Experience with the maintenance and operation of cryogenic equipment.
· Experience in multinational organizations.
· Experience in observatories operations.
· English level C1.
