Leading Bridge Construction Specialist, for COWI in North America

In collaboration with RyQ Ingeniería, the Consorcio RyQ-COWI NA is responsible for the design review, inspection, and supervision of the construction of a suspension bridge across the Chacao channel in Chile on behalf of the Client, the Ministry of Public Works.When completed, the bridge will form an important link in the Chilean transportation infrastructure, connecting the mainland with the Chiloé Island, some 1,000 km south of Santiago. Replacing today’s car ferries with a dual carriageway fixed crossing, the bridge will enhance future development in the sparsely populated southern regions of Chile.

COWI is seeking an experienced Leading Bridge Construction Specialist who brings a deep understanding of construction techniques and procedures, as well as client interfacing skills. In this position, you will join our integral team of experts and will be based on-site in the Region “Los Lagos”, Chile. Your primary task in our team will be to perform site supervision duties during the project construction of the main suspension cables, deck hangers and the orthotropic superstructure deck of the Chacao Channel Bridge on behalf of the client. This is an on-site, contract role with an expected duration of 2 years with possibilities for extension.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

- Plan, organize, and direct daily operations for bridge construction inspection, including liaison with the Contractor on site
- Carry out and coordinate daily inspections of site activities and critical reviews of construction progress, leading a team of onsite Inspection Engineers
- Assign, coordinate and review technical submissions, working closely with our team of engineering experts
- Find practical solutions for issues occurring during construction, and coordinate engineering input when needed
- Oversee the preparation of various reports




- Report the results of the inspections to COWI’s Chief Construction Engineer
- Develop and mentor other construction service staff, and
- Perform other duties as assigned.

On top of that, you will have:

- A University Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution
- A minimum of 10 years' professional experience on large-scale bridge projects, and progressively more senior experience in construction management and supervision
- Knowledge and experience in orthotropic steel deck construction/installation, including heavy lifting and vessel operations, lifting gantry erection and operations, catwalk and cable installation, field welding and bridge deck surface finishing
- The ability and willingness to travel
- A working visa in Chile, or be eligible to obtain one




- Effective communication skills in both verbal and written form are essential; English fluency, spoken and written, is required, and Spanish language skills are desirable
- Team management and project management experience
