Organizational context: The UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Santiago, Chile, operates under the UN's global reform to enhance the UN Development System's effectiveness in achieving the **** Agenda and SDGs.
Empowered by an independent Resident Coordinator, RCOs support national development priorities.
This role is situated within the RCO, supervised by the Head of Office, with functional ties to the SDG Policy and Financing Section, collaborating to ensure aligned SDG policy and sustainable development support.
Job purpose: The Economist will provide substantive economic analysis and evidence-based advice to support sustainable development, economic transformation, and SDG financing initiatives.
This involves researching and analyzing economic and social data, identifying trends, and formulating policy options to accelerate SDG progress, with a focus on gender equality and inclusivity.
The role supports the Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team by providing inputs for policy papers, briefing materials, and knowledge products.
It also involves analyzing the private sector's role in sustainable transformation and financing, researching innovative financing approaches, and contributing to UN programming cycles like the Common Country Analysis and UNSDCF.
The Economist will also engage with national counterparts and stakeholders to foster partnerships and facilitate knowledge sharing on economic transformation and SDG financing, aligning with the UN 2.0 agenda.
Responsibilities
The Economist is responsible for providing comprehensive economic analysis and evidence-based advice on sustainable development, economic transformation, and SDG financing.
Key duties include researching and analyzing economic and social data, identifying trends, and developing policy options to accelerate SDG achievement, ensuring inclusivity.




The role involves supporting the implementation of integral guidelines, preparing analytical inputs for policy papers and briefing materials, and monitoring global economic developments for their impact on national SDGs.
The Economist will analyze the private sector's role in sustainable transformation and financing, research innovative financing methods, and support UNCT initiatives like Integrated National Financing Frameworks.
Additionally, the role involves fostering partnerships with national counterparts, UN entities, IFIs, and other stakeholders, contributing economic analysis to the UN sustainable development programming cycle (CCA, UNSDCF), and managing knowledge on economic transformation and SDG financing.
Data analysis, visualization, and documentation are also key responsibilities.
Education
An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Economics is required.
A Bachelor's degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted.
A background in Data Analytics, Business Analytics, or Data Science programs is advantageous.
Work experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in economic research, macroeconomic/socioeconomic policy, or development economics is required.
Experience in economic/policy analysis, translating data into policy recommendations, and supporting strategic planning is essential.
Desirable experience includes SDG financing, public finance, innovative financing, multi-stakeholder engagement, and UN inter-agency coordination.
