Organizational context: This position is within the Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago. The Sustainable Development Officer reports directly to the Chief of the Division, contributing to the division's mandate and scope.

Job purpose: The Sustainable Development Officer's purpose is to monitor and analyze program and project development and implementation related to sustainable development issues. This involves identifying problems, initiating corrective actions, and liaising with relevant parties. The role contributes by conducting research, analyzing trends, developing policy recommendations, and preparing written outputs. Additionally, the officer provides substantive support to intergovernmental bodies, organizes outreach activities, and manages capacity-building projects, all aimed at advancing sustainable development within the region and enabling data-driven decision-making.

Responsibilities: Key responsibilities include monitoring and analyzing program/project development and implementation, identifying sustainable development issues, and initiating corrective actions. The role involves conducting consulting assignments, facilitating workshops, and developing action plans for Member States. Researching and analyzing sustainable development issues, collecting and interpreting data using visualization methods,



and formulating policy recommendations are crucial. The officer will prepare written outputs, provide substantive support to meetings and intergovernmental bodies, and coordinate outreach and training activities. Leading field missions, managing budget-related activities, and designing/monitoring capacity-building projects are also key duties.

Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant field such as sustainable development, economics, public policy, or social sciences is required. A first-level university degree with two years of qualifying experience may substitute for the advanced degree.

Work experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project/program management or policy-oriented work related to sustainable development is required. Experience in policy analysis, formulation, environmental governance, climate change, and international environmental agreements is also necessary. Experience with human rights and the environment, multilateral processes, or data analytics is desirable.
