Project Overview:
Mining and Metals:
Increasing production of critical minerals provides key components of clean energy technologies, from wind turbines to batteries. This shift to clean energy—and the need for commodities—is critical to underpinning the energy transition. At Bechtel, our teams extract these vital resources to support net zero in a way which is more sustainable than ever before.
Job Summary:
In this role, you will be responsible for planning, developing, coordinating and reviewing civil, structural and architectural engineering and design work for Mining and Metals projects. You will execute and coordinate complete design areas of relevant complexity, with minimal supervision, ensuring that the deliverables, models, plans, calculations, estimates and work plans comply with the scope, program, budget, project requirements, constructability, applicable codes and standards. You will also coordinate with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, other disciplines, global offices and external design houses, and provide technical direction to engineers, designers and draftsmen.
Major Responsibilities:
- Planning, developing, coordinating and reviewing CSA design work within a mid-sized engineering group, for mid-sized projects or support assignments to a global business unit.
- Defining the scope of work and prepare or supervise hour estimates, resource planning and engineering execution plans, managing their implementation and performance according to the program and budget.
- Preparing, reviewing or approving plans, models, calculation reports, specifications, technical reports, bid summaries and other CSA documentation, including earthworks, drainage, roads, foundations, steel structures, architecture and plant layout.
- Reviewing engineering deliverables for accuracy, completeness, level of detail, constructability and compliance with project requirements, applicable codes and standards.
- Coordinating and guiding the daily technical work of engineers, specialists, designers and CSA draftsmen, providing technical direction and on-the-job training to support their professional development.
- Managing interfaces with other disciplines and provide timely background and information necessary for project coordination and management decision making.
- Coordinating with customer representatives, suppliers, subcontractors, integral offices and external design houses; conduct technical discussions and manage the obtaining of approvals in the work phases that are delegated to you.
- Monitoring the performance of the engineering executed by Bechtel and third parties, identify deviations and initiate or recommend corrective actions according to the scope assigned by your supervisor.
- Preparing and maintaining engineering progress and performance reports, including weekly or monthly reports and the Engineering Progress and Performance Report (EPPR), as appropriate.
- Maintaining tracking bases of CSA amounts, coordinating the contributions of other offices and design houses when applicable.
- Developing or contributing to engineering department procedures, design guidelines, standard computer applications, and administrative practices. Communicating complex technical issues and recommend solutions to supervision and management.
- Ensuring that CSA activities and systems are completed within budget and schedule, and comply with applicable installation codes, regulations and standards. Performing other related functions as required by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
University degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or other related discipline, or international equivalent, and between 10 and 13 years of relevant experience; alternatively, between 14 and 17 years of relevant work experience. For assignments of high complexity or area leadership, additional demonstrable experience in major engineering, procurement and construction projects (EPC/EPCM) will be valued.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Extensive knowledge of civil and structural engineering and design applied to mineral processing plants and other industrial facilities.
- Experience in CSA deliverables of multidisciplinary engineering, procurement and construction (EPC/EPCM) projects, and understanding of the functions of construction, procurement, project control and other participating areas.
- Knowledge of constructability, construction methods and materials, and ability to incorporate these criteria during design development and review. Working knowledge of plant layout requirements including access for operation, maintenance and construction.
Solid understanding of structural design in high seismic risk areas.
- Ability to interpret and apply Chilean and other international codes and standards required by the project.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and, preferably, working as an area leader. Ability to define priorities, resolve complex technical issues, communicate recommendations and work independently with minimal supervision.
