CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR A
JOINT ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR POSITION IN THE ORDINARY FACULTY IN BIOLOGY AND SUSTAINABILITY
The Faculty of Biological Sciences (FCCBB) and the Institute for Sustainable Development (IDS) invite applications for a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor position in the Ordinary Faculty, jointly appointed between both units of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to develop an interdisciplinary, independent, and productive research program addressing fundamental and/or applied questions at the interface between biology and sustainability, in areas such as One Health, Biodiversity Conservation, Socioecology, Ecological Restoration, Climate Change Adaptation, Ocean Sustainability, among others.
This joint position seeks to strengthen the University’s institutional capacity to address complex socio-environmental challenges by integrating the rigor of the biological sciences with interdisciplinary sustainability perspectives. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute actively to interdisciplinary research, training in the biological sciences, and the University’s sustainability education programs.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong focus on advancing the frontiers of knowledge in their respective field. Particular value will be placed on their ability to build interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research networks at the national and international levels, as well as demonstrated experience in external engagement and collaboration with societal actors, such as communities, decision-makers, or public policy processes related to sustainable development challenges.
Candidates must also have the competencies required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and to train early-career researchers. Experience in interdisciplinary teaching and active-learning methodologies will be valued, as will a proposed research program relevant to the sustainable development challenges of Chile and Latin America, contributing to context-specific knowledge and appropriate solutions for the region.

Responsibilities associated with the position:
• Conduct independent research of excellence, either fundamental or applied, at the interface between biology and sustainability.
• Develop interactions and collaborations with researchers from other fields at the national and international levels, both within FCCBB and IDS and with other academic units within or outside the University, with the aim of strengthening interdisciplinary research.
• Teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels through theoretical and/or practical courses,
and collaborate in the design and innovation of courses for students in FCCBB programs (Biochemistry, Biology, and Marine Biology), IDS programs (General Education and programs such as Majors and Minors), and other biology-related degree programs, equivalent to three courses per year at the University. If appointed as a faculty member, the successful candidate will be required to complete the 100-hour University Teaching Diploma offered by the UC Center for Teaching Development.
• Train professionals and scientists through the supervision of undergraduate research projects and doctoral theses.

Requirements to apply:
• Doctorial degree and postdoctoral experience.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and lead independent and interdisciplinary research, as well as to secure research funding.
• Teaching experience in higher education is desirable.

• Academic track record, leadership, and quality of scientific output.
• Relevance and potential impact of the interdisciplinary research proposed to be developed jointly between FCCBB and IDS.

Responsabilidades asociadas al cargo
- Realizar investigación independiente de excelencia, fundamental o aplicada, en la interfaz entre biología y sostenibilidad.
- Desarrollar interacciones y colaboraciones con investigadores de otras disciplinas a nivel nacional e internacional, tanto en la FCCBB y el IDS como en otras unidades académicas dentro y fuera de la Universidad.
- Impartir docencia en pregrado y posgrado mediante cursos teóricos y/o prácticos, y colaborar en el diseño e innovación curricular (equivalente a tres cursos por año).
- Si es nombrado en la planta académica, completar el Diplomado en Docencia Universitaria de 100 horas dictado por el Centro de Desarrollo Docente UC.
- Formar profesionales y científicos mediante la supervisión de proyectos de investigación de pregrado y tesis doctorales.
- Obtener financiamiento externo competitivo para sustentar su investigación.
- Participar en actividades académicas y en la gestión y gobernanza universitaria.
- Llevar a cabo actividades de extensión y vinculación con el medio.

- Grado de Doctor (PhD) y experiencia postdoctoral.
- Capacidad demostrada para desarrollar y liderar investigación independiente e interdisciplinaria, así como para obtener fondos competitivos de investigación.
- Experiencia docente en educación superior (deseable).
