Our competitive portfolio of world-class operations and undeveloped resources provides the metals and minerals that enable a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world, while meeting the growing consumer demands of both developed and developing economies. We apply innovative practices and the latest technologies to discover new resources; to extract, process, transport, and market our products to customers around the world in a safe, responsible, and sustainable manner. As a responsible mining company, we work alongside our business partners and various stakeholders to unlock the sustainable value our products represent—not only for our shareholders, communities, and the countries where we operate, but also for society as a whole. Anglo American is re-imagining mining to improve people’s lives.
Job Description
As a Senior Project Geophysicist, you will lead and deliver the design, acquisition, processing, inversion, and integrated interpretation of geophysical surveys that support discovery and near-asset exploration programmes across the Americas and, where required, globally. With a primary focus on porphyry copper systems, you will apply advanced geophysical techniques and collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to generate exploration targets, reduce geological uncertainty, and drive the successful identification and advancement of mineral resources. Core Responsibilities (amongst others): Integrated Interpretation and Targeting:
• Integrate natural-field and controlled-source EM, IP, potential field and passive seismic data to image the physical-property architecture of porphyry copper and related hydrothermal systems.
• Geophysical interpretation: contribute the geophysical component to integrated interpretations developed collaboratively with project geologists, geochemists and structural specialists,
improving geological models and identifying new targets.
• Interpret geophysical results against multiple working geological hypotheses, collaborating closely with an interdisciplinary geoscience team to target the mineral system in the context of all available geoscience data. Methods, Processing, Modelling and Inversion:
• Personally carry out processing, forward modelling and inversion of geophysical data using industry and in-house codes.
• Build potential field forward models to test geological hypotheses across scales.
• Populate 3D geological models with physical rock properties, forward model the geophysical response, and run geologically constrained inversions to test and refine mineral system hypotheses.
• Test, evaluate and implement innovative geophysical acquisition and processing technologies.
• Run 3D inversions of regional aeromagnetic data to image geology at belt to district scale. Regional Datasets and Compilation:
• Compile, level and merge magnetic and gravity surveys of different vintages and specifications into seamless regional datasets for district-scale interpretation and targeting. Building and maintaining these compilations is an ongoing part of this role. Survey Planning and Design:
• Right data at the right time: deliver fit-for-purpose geophysical data to support project decisions.
• Translate the project’s geological questions into geophysical options and rank them by their impact on key project decisions relative to cost, time and execution risk. #LI-AB2 Qualifications
• Minimum of a B.
Sc. degree or equivalent in Geophysics (post-graduate degree preferred).
• English fluency (required).
• Spanish and/or Portuguese fluency or ability and desire to learn (required).
• A sustained career in applied geophysics, with continued personal involvement in data processing, modelling and interpretation.
• An interpretation approach grounded in petrophysics: understand the geology that geophysics can image and relate that geology to the mineral system.
• Exploration experience with porphyry copper systems or, more broadly, magmatic-hydrothermal mineral systems.
• Demonstrated expertise in the processing and interpretation of magnetic and gravity data (e.g. in Geosoft Oasis Montaj), and forward modelling to test geological hypotheses. Additional Information Who we are At Anglo American, we’re redefining what it means to mine responsibly.
