Overview
Do you want to lead a team of Technical Program Managers as they run programs and initiatives that directly impact GitHub’s most critical goals? GitHub is looking for a senior leader to join our Technical Program Management team in our Engineering organization as a people manager. You should be an ambitious, passionate, technical, and collaborative leader, with a strong background in empowering high performing teams and an ability to deliver results through technical programs.
Responsibilities
- Opportunity and Solutions Identification
- Demonstrates and builds experiences across multiple groups or divisions. Leads and coaches teams to develop problem statements and form hypotheses for products and services across divisional boundaries to address highly complex business, program, customer needs, and/or market opportunities; identifies dependencies of other features.
- Determines and leads process improvements to quickly scope insights, and drives change management initiatives. Uses industry understanding to align customers, market, internal stakeholders, senior leadership, and GitHub’s goals and strategy.
- Holds teams accountable for collaborating with others (e.g., Engineering, Marketing, Design) to satisfy customer requirements. Provides expertise to help teams validate market size and opportunity for the greatest value to the company. Facilitates collaboration between their team and other partner teams to bring about solutions.
- Program Planning and Success
- Provides expertise to help teams define multiple program goals and prioritize deliverables for the products and services they own.
- Guides teams to engage in active risk management (proactive and reactive) to identify risks and propose mitigations using data such as telemetry, usage, and customer satisfaction.
- Coaches teams to define success criteria and performance metrics (OKRs, KPIs) of products and services, and works with engineering to ensure necessary telemetry is developed.
- Program/Service Development
- Acts as a subject matter expert in orchestrating and integrating efforts for the development and implementation of products and services on large cross‑functional projects with internal teams and external partners.
- Guides teams to partner with engineering to prioritize and deliver on the roadmap for products and services; drives understanding of value proposition and answers technical questions for owned features.
- Guides teams to justify capacity requirements and advocate for the right resource allocation, partnering with engineering to align feature capabilities with goals and trade‑offs.
- Guides teams in tracking, coordinating, and communicating end‑to‑end schedules and ensuring that stakeholders follow established processes.
- Guides teams in tracking and managing dependencies to enable cohesive user scenarios, avoid issues, and mitigate risks; coaches adjustments or course corrections when projects are misaligned.
- Drives teams to develop staging and implementation plans for pilots/releases aligned with OKRs and KPIs, and ensures collaboration with stakeholders to monitor progress and adjust as needed.
- Helps teams lead governance programs and processes to ensure performance requirements and standards (quality, compliance, privacy, security,
safety, accessibility) are met throughout the development lifecycle.
- Continuous Improvement
- Provides expertise to help teams partner with others to collect performance metrics, monitor and report on progress, and derive insights that lead to actions.
- Ensures teams share insights with Engineering and other partners, leads hypotheses formation, performs experiments, and iterates to drive measurable improvement in performance metrics.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in engineering, product/technical program management, data analysis, or product development; or
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, Math, Business, or related field with 8+ years of similar experience; or
- Master’s degree in the same fields with 6+ years of similar experience; or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years of experience managing cross‑functional and/or cross‑team projects.
Compensation Range
The base salary range for this role is USD $160,200 – $425,000 per year. Additional compensation may include an annual bonus, stock, and sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
