Overview
As a Software Engineer III at GitHub, you will enhance the collaboration experience by designing, prototyping, implementing, shipping, and supporting highly performant and inspiring user experiences with a distributed, diverse, and passionate team. The role focuses on reliability, performance, and application services, impacting multiple GitHub services and teams.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test and ship high‑quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services and improve reliability.
- Own and understand the operational aspects of building systems across the GitHub portfolio of products.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to define and implement innovative solutions at scale.
- Own and advocate for the health and quality of the systems that the team builds, including participating in on‑call and first responder rotations.
- Write architecture briefs and proposals, conduct code experiments, and build prototypes to learn how we can achieve planetary scale with our systems.
- Design and implement APIs to facilitate seamless integration between software components.
- Utilize CI/CD tools to set up automated pipelines for continuous integration and delivery.
- Become intimately familiar with the systems you build and take pride in writing maintainable code.
- Identify areas to integrate instrumentation for system behavior such as performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety mechanisms.
- Contribute to sustaining feedback loops from telemetry resulting in subsequent designs.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science,
or a related technical discipline with demonstrated experience in maintaining and delivering production software using languages such as C, C++, C#, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
- OR an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related field AND 3+ years of relevant experience
- OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related field AND 2+ years of experience in computer science or a related discipline with proven coding experience in languages such as C, C++, C#, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python
- OR a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Math, Physics, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ years experience designing, building, scaling and maintaining large‑scale distributed systems (user base of 10 million+).
Compensation
Base salary range: USD $107,700 – $285,900 per year. Compensation is based on location, experience, and skill set.
