Position

Senior Pharmacist – Surgical Services within the Pharmacy Department based across both University Hospital Ayr and University Hospital Crosshouse sites.

Hours and Working Pattern

36 hours per week. Core hours between 08:30 – 16:30 Monday – Friday. The post-holder shall participate in weekend, public holiday and late night rotas. This post is offered on a permanent basis. Job share will be considered.

UK Driving Licence

UK driving licence is essential for this role.

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will lead the delivery of clinical pharmacy services to surgical inpatient areas and pre‑operative assessment clinics across both acute sites. The post‑holder will lead a team of clinical pharmacists and clinical pharmacy technicians in specialties including trauma and orthopaedics, urology, bariatric and general surgery, and pre‑operative assessment clinics. The role involves patient prioritisation, pharmacist prescribing, ongoing development of the clinical pharmacy technician role, service re‑design and discharge pathways. The post‑holder will also participate in clinical pharmacy services to critical care units across both acute sites as part of team rota.

Essential Qualifications & Training

- Master of Pharmacy Degree or equivalent
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Post‑Registration Foundation Programme for Pharmacists (or demonstrable evidence of clinical knowledge equivalent to that level)
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or RPS Core Advanced Curriculum (or demonstrable evidence of clinical knowledge equivalent to that level, or currently working towards this qualification)
- Practice certificate in pharmacist prescribing (or currently working towards this qualification)

Desirable Qualifications & Training

- Member of the Royal College of Pharmacy
- Postgraduate Masters degree in Clinical Pharmacy

Essential Experience





- Relevant clinical pharmacy experience at a senior level
- Experience in service development and an ability to examine current practice and develop and implement innovative solutions for improvement
- Experience in teaching, education and training

Desirable Experience

- Recognised designated supervisor for trainee pharmacists, pharmacists or pharmacy technicians undertaking further qualifications
- Experience with electronic prescribing and administration

- Expert level of clinical pharmacy knowledge
- Advanced knowledge regarding medicines, medicines legislation and practice
- Advanced arithmetic skills
- Expert knowledge and understanding of standards and guidelines
- Knowledge of IT systems in relation to electronic prescribing and administration

- Advanced communication skills
