About The Position
PhD Research Fellow in linguistics at the Faculty of Humanities and Education, University of Agder. The position is a full‑time, 100 % role in the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation, located at Campus Kristiansand, for a period of three years. The starting date is 1 January 2027 or as agreed with the Faculty.
Department Overview
The Department of Foreign Languages and Translation employs 23 permanent academic staff and teaches approximately 300 students across study programmes in English, French, German, Spanish, teacher education and translation studies.
Responsibilities
Conduct research in connection with the project Category shifts, the periphery, and the structure of linguistic categories (CatS) (2026‑2030) , aiming to generate a formal theory of categories, category shifts and category boundaries.
Collect and analyse data on one of the following languages: Norwegian, Spanish, Polish, or a classifier language such as Vietnamese, Thai or Chinese.
Collaborate with a research assistant on a second language in the project.
Apply knowledge of at least one generative or cognitive‑functional linguistic approach, and be open to integrating the other perspective.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in linguistics, language, or a relevant subject domain.
Demonstrated experience in generative, cognitive, or functional linguistics.
Good knowledge of English, both written and oral.
General proficiency in at least one of the following languages: Norwegian, Spanish, Polish, or a classifier language such as Vietnamese, Thai or Chinese.
Applicants who are in the final stages of their master’s degree may also apply.

Experience with the use of corpora for linguistic research.
