The Valparaiso Parks Department is accepting applications for the part-time position described below.
This position would be part of the Event and Venue Division and is designed to provide assistance to the operations of the Valpo Parks system, while reporting directly to the Event and Venue Director. The Food & Beverage Assistant would be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the food and beverage operations, including concessions, bars, catering services, and daily meal logistics. This role is responsible for managing staff, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, optimizing profitability, and delivering an exceptional experience to patrons and internal partners.
A person in this position should have strong organizational skills, professional communication skills, a healthy work ethic, the ability to be versátil and multi-task, strong customer service skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
General Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Management: Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise food and beverage staff, ensuring a high level of performance and customer service.
- Operations Management: Oversee day‑to‑day food and beverage operations, including inventory, ordering supplies, and ensuring timely set‑up and breakdown for events.
- Meal Coordination & Delivery: Coordinate, pick up, and deliver lunches Monday through Friday to the Banta Center, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and proper food handling procedures.
- Financial Oversight: Manage food and beverage budgets, monitor expenses, track revenue, and develop strategies to maximize profitability.
- Customer Experience:
Ensure an exceptional patron experience by maintaining high service standards and addressing customer inquiries or concerns.
- Health & Safety Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to food safety, alcohol service regulations, and hygiene standards.
- Vendor Relations: Build and maintain relationships with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely and cost‑effective delivery of food and beverage supplies.
- Event Coordination: Collaborate with event and production teams to meet the needs of special events, receptions, and performances.
- Menu Development: Contribute to developing and implementing creative food and beverage offerings that enhance the patron experience.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in food and beverage management, hospitality, or a similar leadership role.
- Strong leadership, team‑building, and staff management skills.
- Proven experience in managing budgets, inventory, and cost control.
- Exceptional interpersonal, problem‑solving, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, high‑energy environment with strong attention to detail.
- Proficiency in POS systems, inventory management software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must be of legal age to serve alcohol and possess or obtain required certifications (e.g., food handler, alcohol server permits).
- Previous experience working in theaters, concert halls, or similar event‑driven venues.
- Experience developing menus and coordinating catered events.
- Knowledge of food safety and alcohol service compliance.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
